I'm really grateful I learned Haskell before I saw a lot of online comments like this.

Women (and nonbinaries and children and furries and anyone, really) can and do use Haskell, and I'm sorry that are there are still people in the world who think you have to be a dude to do math/C/C++/Haskell/etc.
@argumatronic @awilfox all I see is people getting offended by a joke...
I'm not saying that the position of women in the field is good, or that it shouldn't be defended and discussed. But the joke wasn't about that. Please people, stop pushing your agenda on jokes.
You want a discussion about women on the field and the rampant discrimination that goes with it, fine I'm more than happy to participate. But not here, not with this quote as base.
@awilfox @argumatronic he shouldn't have to apologize.
There is a difference between calling on somebody publicly and resolve a matter privately. Especially when it's about interpretation.
As much as you have the right to say what you want, I have the right to tell you, you're wrong about the joke.
@Balor Saying things like I put a target on his back is hyperbolic and unreasonable. I chose to do it publicly because it resulted in some good conversations, made some people more aware of how insidious those stereotypes are and how tiresome they become. You also did not resolve this with me privately, did you? No, but you're emotional.
Discussing this with you further does not interest me. Cheers.
@argumatronic
I admit you're right, I should have bring the matter in a DM. I only used the same way of communication you used. You made it public.
Hyperbolic, maybe, but in this day and time, calling somebody for being misogynist without even directly contacting the person in question... It raises question about what you want to achieve.
May it be haskell, c, etc... Anybody should be able to learn and work professionally with it without a care in the world for their gender.
@Balor @argumatronic @awilfox honestly though? she's right: the jokes around advanced programming languages, unix, math, etc discourage people from trying. but, he is right too: it takes a lot of grit and determination to master Haskell (or any other language), and it's fine to joke about it -- but the "unixbeard" joke honestly passed it's sell by date a decade ago. there are more welcoming ways to say Haskell isn't easy
@argumatronic @awilfox @kaniini
Agreed π
I only disagree with the way she brings the issue to light. She could have simply answered the toot stating exactly your points which are more than valid.
@kaniini @Balor @argumatronic @awilfox I'm clean shaven and I unix :D I also don't really think Haskell is any more daunting than say, Scheme or Common Lisp.
@Irick @Balor @argumatronic @awilfox programming and system administration can be intimidating to the novice. obviously it's not daunting to someone who has solid fundamentals already.
@kaniini @Balor @argumatronic @awilfox I can see that. Hmm... well, there are a lot of those neat interactive introductory things these days.
@Balor @awilfox I'm afraid neither of you has the right to tell me what I am or am not allowed to discuss or or where or how I should interpret things, though. Fortunately, the author of the quote and I have talked about it and he saw my point and apologized. It's not my place to say so, but perhaps y'all need to examine your biases.
My only agenda is encouraging --not discouraging -- people to learn Haskell, because I like Haskell.
Exeunt.
