Looking for a replacement for FB Messenger for group texting that's not a pile of nerddery

(e.g. set up your own install of this jabber server omg nooooo)

@PresGas I've got both Signal and Wire. I found groups to be pretty flaky in Signal, maybe it's better now?

@odinsdream The key is also likely to be you have to have everyone on Signal

Also I think iPhone alerts aren't always....alerting. I need to get some meatspace time with one of my group people that has an iPhone and look over their shoulder.

@PresGas how would you even be using Signal to talk to non-Signal folks? My issues related to not being able to leave groups, or delete them once I did leave, constant issues with messages failing to decrypt for all group members, and notification overload due to a lack of group-specific settings

@odinsdream I'd be curious when you used it last. However, I also have not been "fully" using it until recently.

Yes, you have to get non-Signal folks using Signal for the encrypting and desktop use. Otherwise, "mixed company" uses only sms/mms messaging which is NOT encrypted.

I have not had to leave a group (yet!). 😜

@PresGas again I'm unaware there's a method of using Signal to message anyone not on Signal. Is there? You can use the invite feature to trigger another app to open with an SMS composed but... Is there something else?

@odinsdream in Android, you can use it as your SMS app these days.

@PresGas Because it risks confusing people into thinking they're communicating securely since they're using "that app their security conscious friend made them install" when in fact they're not?

@odinsdream yeah, but this security conscious friend let's their friends know that.

This is good to talk about!

@PresGas I use it frequently for 1:1 chats but gave up on groups as of a few months ago
