I finally wrote my reading reflection for The Slave by Isaac Bashevis Singer, which I read a couple of months ago. It is a beautiful book, sad, haunting. I’m glad I read it. Of course, the whole time I was reading it I was thinking about Jews currently in captivity and how this seems to be an inescapable part of our history.

Decades later, I began researching and rescuing Kirschen's forgotten computer games and software for the Apple II, Atari ST, Commodore Amiga, and IBM PC.

Over the years, he and his wife Sali graciously made time to talk with me and send material related to his software.

I'm proud to have published histories on it for my blog, Emory University, the Internet Archive and Juiced.GS.

Sad news: "Dry Bones" cartoonist Yaakov Kirschen has died.

I first encountered Kirschen through his "Mom and Me" and "Murray and Me" graphical chatbot programs (received from my uncle Jim when he handed down his Atari ST to us in the late 1980s).

Kirschen's work on "Mom" and "Murray" was profiled in-depth by the NYT, LAT, and others.

Seder!

One of our London members is organising a potluck seder on Tuesday. Short on notice but long on community!

If you haven’t been before to anything we’ve run, this would be a fun first event.

Bring a small vegan dish to share, and find fellowship and Matzo with queer and leftist Jews.

We do not have the ability to reheat food (there is a tea kettle however). Please note that we will use grape juice only at this event.

Late arrival is ok. We ask that everyone follow our code of conduct.

If you have not been before, please book.

(All of our events are listed in our Calendar, which you can sync to your phone or device.)

According to Rashi, the Plague of Frogs during Passover "was only one frog, but when they struck at it, it was split into many swarms."

So if you want a biblically accurate Seder, I suggest you get a frog piñata and fill it with frog shaped candies.

This is as #Jewish as I get, folks. Live it up. 🤣

True story: one of the first comics I ever drew as a kid was "Santa Flies Over a Jewish Neighborhood" and it was all anti-aircraft fire and dead reindeer hanging in the traces. I can still see Santa gritting his teeth, his beard whipping in the wind, as he whips the reindeer onward.

#SandySprings passes restrictions on #protests, #canvassing and engaging with others without permission

Hayden Sumlin, April 4th, 2025

Excerpt:
"Police Chief DeSimone said the personal encroachment ordinance would assist public safety in Sandy Springs. He cited a case recently where two individuals silently walked across the City Green during the Oct. 10, 2023 'Stand in Solidarity with #Israel' vigil wearing 'Arab headdresses with two #Palestinian flags that walked into the crowd.'

" 'My guys had to grab them pretty quick and get them out of there; this ordinance will help us do that because they walked through there for only one reason, to intimidate,' DeSimone said.

"Councilwoman Reichel asked DeSimone if that meant his department, 'would arrest someone just for walking through a group of people?'

" 'Yes,' the police chief answered. 'If they were walking with a Nazi flag, under this ordinance we would arrest them. Palestinian flag, we would arrest them. Because they are doing it for only one reason and that is to intimidate the Jewish community.' [But it's okay for #ElonMusk and others in #Trump's circle to use Nazi salute? HYPOCRITES!]

"Councilwomen Reichel and Kelley pushed back on his comments about the ordinance and Palestinian people.

"At one point DeSimone asked Reichel, who is #Jewish, if she would consider it harassment for someone to walk by her with a Palestinian flag at a pro-Jewish event.

" 'I don’t think that would be harassing me. I mean, if they came up to me and started getting in my face or started pushing me, or started to physically touch me, that is harassing, yes,' she said. 'But I do believe in the #FirstAmendment and I believe in freedom of speech.' "

I have many friends who keep kosher. But everyone seems to have their own rules, limits, and versions.

I have not, to date, kept kosher.

I told a friend that I was considering it, their response was interesting. Rather than the stereotypical "oh, are you going to separate meat and dairy?", their response was "oh, are you going to get your meat from a kosher butcher?"

I found that interesting. The importance and significance of how the animal was killed seems, at least in this person's mind, to be more important than some of the more well-known rules.

**What is your version of kosher? What do you feel is the most important part, or the most significant thing I should consider?**

Is it separating milk and meat? Is it separating plates and silverware? Is it going tot a kosher butcher? Is it something else?

Note this is not specificallt about Passover, that is its own discussion.
