Is there an email list, RSS feed, or Mastodon account that can contact me when a new version gets tagged in their Git repository? I don’t remember to log in and do `git pull` and the rest of the steps. I wound up on an alpha version for far longer than I wanted.

I'm working on setting up a #mastodon instance and the most difficult part of it may be setting up a mail server. My last attempt ended in failure so this is basically my kryptonite. My question for #MastodonAdmins is: is it necessary to do that for a single-user instance or can I skate by without one, at least for the short term until I gather up the courage to try a second go at this?

Is anyone else getting many random follows from user123 at gtmastodon.online or mastodon.gtmastodon.online? (The numbers vary.) I'm going to defederate with this instance unless anyone out there knows what they're up to.

Question for all the #mastodonadmins out there - I recently found out that my media s3 storage is sitting at 4.8TB worth of data lmao.

I updated the system settings to purge them after 14 days - about 14 days ago and nothing has been purged yet. How do I force it to purge any media thats older than 14 days?

Anyone running multiple #Fediverse services on one domain, but using user@dmn.tld for identification instead of user@mstdn.dmn.tld or user@pxlfd.dmn.tld? How do you handle #Webfinger responses in these cases? My current experience is that regardless of service used, the service will always direct users to the first profile in the webfinger response (using pxlfed but getting a users mstdn profile), which sure seems like a #bug to me.

#Ubuntu-Server: #PostgreSQL liegt in den Versionen 15, 16 und 17 vor.

Mastodon nimmt aber nur die 15er (Einstellungen → Administration → v15.9), ich finde aber keine Einstellung, die bspw. gleich die 17er nimmt.

„pg_config --version“ gibt 17 für root (aber auch als User mastodon) aus.

Mastodon v4.3.1 erlaubt „12 or newer“; insofern dürfte es keine Konflikte geben.

Was übersehe ich? (ja, die Woche war lang und anstrengend, habt Nachsicht)

I posted this to highlight a situation that #MastodonAdmins and those steering the project like @Gargron and others fail to see.

There is a deeply rooted problem here and being blind to it doesn't make it go away.

I wanted to make it as low-overhead as possible for busy admins.

#mastodonadmins, I made my first (barely there, but hey) release of Python tools for working directly with a Mastodon instance's database. It's at https://github.com/freeradical-dot-zone/mastools . The initial goal is to set up the framework I can use for building more advanced stuff later.

It does have a nice "show-user-changes" command that shows you which users have recently added or removed URLs from their bios, which is handy for looking for tech support spammers. I run it from an hourly cron job.

Heya #mastodonadmins, I put it to a vote and my users overwhelming preferred to block Gab before they had a chance to get up to mischief. What domains exactly are *you* blocking? Is it gab.com and develop.gab.com?

There was a lot of skepticism about my claims that a lot of recent spam account registrations were connected to Russia. Turns out I'd underestimated: it's actually 100% of them that are.

My #mastodonadmins friends: I think the wave of spammers is going to get worse, and I think it goes a lot further than just spam. Basically, I think Russia is going to try to use us the same way they used Twitter and Facebook in the 2016 elections. We can't let that happen.
